Atlas, a Titan from Greek mythology (pronounced /ˈætləs/; Greek: Ἄτλας, Átlas), was punished by being condemned to hold up the heavens or sky for eternity after the Titanomachy.
In addition to this role, Atlas is also featured in the legends of two of the greatest Greek heroes, Heracles (known as Hercules in Roman mythology) and Perseus.
According to Hesiod, an ancient Greek poet, Atlas was positioned at the ends of the earth in the far west. Later on, he became linked with the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa and was believed to have been the first King of Mauretania (present-day Morocco, distinct from the modern country of Mauritania).
Atlas was reputed to have been skilled in mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy, having invented the first celestial sphere, and in some texts, he is even attributed with the discovery of astronomy itself.
